Moving Heavy Equipment Over The Road To A New Location

Posted on

Heavy equipment is often needed on job sites or in locations that require the machines to be moved. Since most of these machines are too large to drive from one place to another, you need to work with a heavy equipment transport company.

Trailers and Equipment

When you are hiring a heavy equipment transportation service to move your machines, you need to be specific about the kind of equipment you need to be moved. In order to get the right trailer for the job, the transport service needs to know how heavy the equipment is, and they will need to know the height, width, and length of the machine.

Once the heavy equipment transportation service has the information about the equipment you need to be moved, they can select the proper trailer to support the machine's weight and one that will adequately support the equipment while it is moving. If the trailer is too small, the equipment could become unstable and cause the trailer to tip over or fail under the strain.

Permits and Routes

Anytime you hire a heavy equipment transportation service, you need to talk with them about any special permits that they may need. Often a trailer that is overly long or wide will require an oversize load permit, and in some situations, the truck may also need a pilot car to let traffic know it is coming down the road.

When the transportation service is planning the route, they will look for wide roads that do not have a lot of traffic on them, and often they will try and avoid towns if they can. The idea is to choose a route with as little resistance as possible so the driver can move your equipment without incident. If the truck needs to pass through a town, they may need to get the police to block the road for them, depending on the size of the equipment being moved.

Removing Parts

If the equipment you need to be moved is overly wide or tall, the heavy equipment transportation service may ask you to remove something so that it fits better on the trailer. A large harvester or tractor with dual tires, for instance, may need the outer tires removed. This is not uncommon for large machines, and in some cases, it is the only way to get the equipment to fit on the trailer for its trip.

Often things like antennas on the roof or other items that stick up may need to come off so they do not hit power lines along the route, but the transport company will let you know once they measure the equipment. contact a heavy equipment transportation service for more information.
